1st March - The Burial of the Sardine in La Orotava is today, and the colour black reigns as people dress up to mourn the end of Carnival.

3rd March - Looking for something for the kids? Then stop by Parque García Sanabria at 6pm for some fun!

4th March - 1pm marks one of the last opportunities to celebrate the excesses of the Carnival. Stop by the day carnival in Santa Cruz!

4th March - The dance of the piñata signals the culmination of evening Carnival celebrations. Neighbourhoods and villages get together to put on orchestras. 5th March - The Ni fú-ni fá Philharmonic takes the stage at 11am at Plaza del Príncipe. Why not then round off the day with a pyrotechnics show in the capital? It really is something to be seen!

10th March - Las Burras de Güímar put on a show in Güímar at Plaza de San Pedro. The spectacle provides a fresh take on the typical Burying of the Sardine, bringing witches and folklore into the mix.

24th February to 4th March - These dates mark the 7th Arona International Music Festival, in Los Cristianos. Most of the events that are part of the festival will take place in the Infanta Leonor Auditorium (entry €5).

3rd December 2016 to 5th March 2017 - Don Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, embajador de España (Don Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, ambassador of Spain) pays homage to the great Cervantes. Location: San Francisco Convent, Icod de Los Vinos.

30th January to 1st April - Mujeres modelos. Mujeres de moda 1850-1940 (Women models. Women in fashion from 1850 to 1940) is a photographic exhibition that serves as a testament to the evolution of women in society and their changing roles in art and other fields. Location: Espacio Cultural CajaCanarias, San Cristóbal de La Laguna.

14th October 2016 to 23rd April 2017 - CEDOCAM (The Canarias and Americas Documentation Centre) presents Trazo cervantino. Una visión de “El Quijote” en el CEDOCAM (The Cervantine Line. A vision of El Quijote at CEDOCAM) as an homage to the great Cervantes to mark the 4th centenary of his death.


Best things to do in Tenerife in March 2017: sporting and themed events

12th March - Today marks the 12th Cross Popular San José run in El Sauzal (entry €3 for children, €5 for adults).

12th March - A plethora of prizes are up for grabs in the Las Lagunetas Orientation competition. The race lasts 2 and a half hours, and participants are organised into age groups. There are different entry prices, depending on whether you’re professional or not, of course …

12th March - Come and test your mettle in the 2nd Ocean Lava TriSantaCruz triathlon. 200 places are available for the Olympic category (1.5km swim, 40km cycle and 10km run), and 300 places for the Half category (1.9km swim, 90km cycle and 21km run). Registration is open to participants until 28th February, and costs €60 for the Olympic triathlon and €150 for the Half triathlon.

12th March - More of a mountain runner? Then take part in one of three different courses (10km, 13km and 34km) in the 6th Guía de Isora mountain run which takes place between 8am and 6pm.

18th March - Take a dip in the 6th Indoor Aquathlon in La Laguna (entry €5). One of the best things to do in Tenerife in March 2017.

19th March - If you prefer more laidback outdoor pursuits, the 3rd Fuentealta Villaflor Trail might be the choice for you. Two courses are available: 11.5km and 21km.

19th March - Try the 4th Pajarote Trail (15km) in La Laguna (entry €15).

26th March - The Las Raíces Orienteering competition lasts 2 and a half hours from start to finish, and there are several different age categories. There are different entry prices, depending on whether you’re professional or not, of course …
