Tenerife North Canary Islands Airport, also known as Aeropuerto Los Rodeos, is located in the north of the island of Tenerife in the town of La Laguna and 13 km from the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Operating since 1946, this airport serves about 4 million passengers per year, through more than 10 airlines (including for cheap flights to Tenerife) linking about 13 destinations, mostly within Spain. This is the airport from which, most probably, you will be arriving if you change flights in Madrid - although you have the choice, when booking your flight, to choose the South Airport also.

The airport Los Rodeos is open from 6.00 in the morning until 23.00 hours (in Canary Islands), but the operating hours of the airport is from 7.15 to 22.00 (until 23.00 if requested by the airlines).

There are several airlines connecting the islands with very short flights, in some cases several times a day. On top of that, there are some low cost companies, with which you can book cheap flights to Tenerife. Among all of them we can mention Air Europa, Air Nostrum, Binter Canarias, Iberia, Finnair, Islas Airways, SBA Airlines, Orbest, Vueling and Islas Net.


Departures and Arrivals at Tenerife Canary Islands Airport

The departure hall for domestic flights at the North Airport – Los Rodeos is quite spacious and bright. The check-in is done from the ground floor of the terminal, and you can access that area directly from the taxi rank and bus stop or from the underground public parking. In this hall there are a wide variety of shops. Its capacity is about 3,000 passengers at peak times, through the 37 check-in desks (one for special baggage) in the terminal. After checking-in, passengers should go to one of the 11 boarding gates and pass through the security checkpoint located on the top floor of the building.

If you fly to any of the other Canary Islands, there are 10 self check-in desks and boarding can be done through a special area for interisland flights located on the ground floor, with 6 boarding gates.

The arrival at this airport for any domestic and interisland flights is via one of the 6 bridges to receive passengers, and it is located on the ground floor. They take you to the baggage claim area, equipped with six conveyor belts and also located on the ground floor. At the airport there are no luggage lockers, so plan ahead in case you need to carry many bags.

There is a Customs Service at the airport, necessary in case you need to declare anything in your luggage.

Parking at this Canary Islands Airport

If you are coming by car, there is a public paid parking with more than 800 spaces available and some of them for disabled visitors. You can then pay the tickets at the parking lot, in one of the machines located at the entrance and exit.

The prices of the parking are mentioned below, subject to changes:

*In case of loss, the visitor must pay 5 days stay, according to the daily maximum amount up to 4 days for general parking (10,60 €), except if the stay of the vehicle was proven true by means available in the management and control system. In this case, the charges can be settled according to the actual stay.

On the other hand, there is a passenger unloading area called Kiss & Go, where someone can drop you off without paying the parking. This area is located between the departure and the public bus stop. Note that you cannot park in this area; otherwise your car might be towed.

Disabled Visitors

The entire airport is equipped for the reception and comfort access for people with limited mobility. There are also reserved parking spaces, phones to a lower level than usual, toilets, information desks and special information for these users. There are also special areas for wheelchairs and meeting point in the arrival hall so that passengers do not have any difficulty accessing or leaving the airport and enjoy the services.

To access the plane with the wheelchair, passengers must contact the airline with which they have reserved the flight. And in case you have to wait at the airport, there are also various collection, support and waiting areas for companions or relatives of the person with limited mobility.

VAT Refund

If you are a Canaries resident you can claim back the VAT (Value added Tax) of what you bought in the Iberian Peninsula. You should go to the Office of the Canary Islands airport (Oficina del Gobierno de Canarias) you are located, and show your invoices for goods purchased, so to get them stamped. Proceed then to the Customs, where you get another seal. At last, post your invoices to the address of the seller, as they will be in charge of the refund.

  • In case of problems with the airline, such as lost luggage, flight cancellation or other reasons, there is a service for complaints and basic rights for every passenger.   • First aid, lost and found, and tourist information are also on the ground floor. Services such as VIP lounges are located in the mezzanine. The security forces such as National Police or the Civil Guard are located on the first floor. There is no Postal office or stamps dispenser at the airport, but outside the building there is a mailbox where you can drop your postcards and ordinary mail;

  • Should you need to wait for your flight at the north Tenerife Canary Islands airport, there are few shops and pharmacy on the second floor, as well as few restaurants and bars. On the ground floor you will find a lottery and a store for newspapers and magazines. There are designated areas for smokers.
