Garachico
Former Main Port of Tenerife

Garachico is an important historical center of Tenerife, an elegant village located in the north of the island, which origin dates back to 1496. It composes along with Buenavista del Norte, Los Silos and El Tanque, the Isla Baja. Due to the long history and importance of their people, the architecture of the buildings is very refined and traditional, very beautiful, so it is essential to visit this coastal town when visiting the island. There you can enjoy a quiet walk through the pedestrian streets and feel transported to another time, thanks to the serenity of the village.

  • Convento de Santo Domingo de Guzmán and Convento Agustino de San Julián (Convents);
  • Hacienda El Lamero;

  • Garachico is much known for the eruption of El Volcán Negro (volcano), in 1709, that tragically buried much of the village. It should be mentioned that at the entrance of the village there is a house where you can see the level at which the village was before the eruption;
  • The natural pools El Caletón;
  • The forest Madre del Agua.

In August are the festivities of the town, and in Garachico is celebrated the feast of San Roque with a very entertaining moment for those enjoying it. Also it is a village very connected with its traditions and culture, so we really recommend stopping by around any time of year.

The most visible and perhaps more representative point of Garachico is the, considered since 1994, Monumento Natural del Roque de Garachico. Being of volcanic origin, the vegetation is scarce in its 5 hectares of land and 77 meters of height, but on the other hand it is a refuge for many migratory birds. It is located only 300 meters from the shore, but the visit of this part of the coast is not possible, due to the difficult access.

You can eat in the neighbourhood, on the edge of Carretera de El Guincho (road),  in the restaurant El Drago, where they specialize in octopus. You can also go to the restaurant Casa Gaspar or the restaurant La Perla.
