Hotel Royal Sun Resort
... Amazing Place Along the Wall of Los Gigantes

Having no more than entered the Hotel Royal Sun Resort (located in the centre of the complex), along a narrow street which borders part of the mountain (and along which the Los Gigantes cliff continues), I couldn’t help but stop and enjoy for a few seconds the soft breeze which reached me in combination with the spectacular aerial views of the town of Los Gigantes and its marina. In the distance was the silhouette of the island of La Gomera and to the right I saw the broad wall of the Los Gigantes Cliff.

Tenerife Travel Secret

The building in which this marvellous four star hotel is located was previously used by another hotel company, but after more than seven years out of use, the Hotel Royal Sun Resort held an opening with no expense spared in November 2012.

The first feeling that you will get about the Hotel Royal Sun Resort will be of doubt … how could a building with those characteristics be maintained on the side of a mountain? First of all be assured that it is one of the most impressive places that Tenerife Travel Secrets has had the pleasure to visit and write about on the web. For your information it is a very safe place, as the Los Gigantes Council irrigated the whole area to avoid problems with water which can fall down the cliff when it rains.

Generally tourists look for the most visited and well-known destinations, and for that reason Los Gigantes is a hidden gem as it has everything which you could want from the Costa Adeje and Playa de las Américas, but with unrivaled tranquility. That tranquility is what the guests of the Hotel Royal Sun Resort guests often seek.

An added extra of this hotel are the views which you get from everywhere within it. From anywhere in the hotel, without exception, you will enjoy some marvellous views. We assure you that you will be at one of the hotels at the highest altitude and with the best views on the island.

Communal Areas of the Royal Sun Resort

There are two swimming pools: one for children (fourth floor) and the other for adults (third floor), both heated and with spectacular views from their terraces.

In the children’s pool area (2 metres long and 40cm deep), there is graffiti of some huge waves which covers the wall almost completely. A small waterfall cascades down from the children’s pool to the adults’ one. The adult pool is 25 metres long, 5 metres wide and 1.3 metres deep, and you’ll find benches integrated into it with water jets for relaxation.

The sun usually ‘visits’ the swimming pool area of the Royal Sun Resort at approximately 11am in winter, but in summer obviously it’s earlier. Don’t forget that the hotel is located in the wall of a mountain and that the sun comes out from behind it, so you will always have to wait a few hours if you want to start your sunny day. This in turn makes the guests’ day much more relaxed, as they can enjoy a leisurely breakfast without thinking that they are losing precious time in the sun ;)

The gym and aerobics room, small but full, are free to use for all hotel guests. You will also be able to enjoy playing squash on the courts designed for that.

Restaurants and Bars at the Royal Sun Resort

The ‘Oasis Abraxas’ Bar, which is located in the pool area on the third floor, is open from 11am to 7pm. This strikingly-decorated bar offers any drink, from freshly-squeezed juices to tropical cocktails.

On the second level you will find the Café Royale where they serve breakfast, lunch and, optionally, dinner. They currently serve à la carte food as well as a buffet at both breakfast and dinner, as they are trying to offer fresh, healthy products. You can enjoy your food inside the Café or on its terrace with panoramic views.

As the hotel opened in 2012 it is still in a development phase, seeking out the best options to attract a customer who enjoys the small pleasures in life in tranquillity accompanied by quality, tasty menus. For that reason the Café Royale may be turned into a trattoria.

On the first floor you will find the Regency Restaurant which is open from 5pm to 11pm and serves an à la carte menu. They have an extensive range of wines and will soon open a small wine cellar so that the customer can enjoy a better offering of bottles of wine. On Mondays they offer a barbecue on the terrace in front of the Recency Restaurant.

The walls of the Recency are decorated with paintings of great film characters.

In the large hall which is located opposite reception they organise shows put on by external groups three times per week, and there is also a nice bar called Bar Imperial. Every night a variety of activities are put on by the hotel, and if all that weren’t enough you can entertain yourself at either of the two billiard tables.

Rooms at the Royal Sun Resort

Tenerife Travel Secret

Without exception, the 120 apartments all have sea views – and what views!!!

The types of apartment are the following: standard (studio style), which is by no means the standard size of studios in conventional hotels. To start with they are 46m2 not counting the terrace and they have an open plan kitchen with all the utensils you need to be able to spend a few quiet days in a self-sufficient way at the hotel. They have a large terrace (26m2) from where there are marvellous views, with an awning to protect from the sun and an area to relax with a table and chairs. There is a flat-screen television, a ceiling fan, wifi connection, a safe, an iron and ironing board, and a bathroom with everything you need. They easily accommodate two people and you can request an extra bed if necessary.

I was able to see a one bedroom apartment (203) which has everything the studio has, but with a separate bedroom which connects with the bathroom. The space in the apartment is from 52m2 to 60m2 and the terrace is 43m2 to 46m2 with views of the sea which take your breath away. It comfortably accommodates two people.

As some guests were about to arrive they were getting the apartment ready and among the little details were a bottle of water and a basket of fruit for the guests.

The space in the two bedroom apartment is from 60m2 to 77m2 and the terrace is from 45m2 to 53m2 with impressive sea views. It has the same features as previously mentioned for the studio and the one bedroom apartment, but the difference is that one of the bedrooms has two single beds and the other has a double. It easily accommodates four people and there is the possibility for another two people to sleep on the sofa in the living room.

The superior apartments are from 75m2 to 93m2 (they are usually offered exclusively to families), they have a garden of 53m2 to 80m2 and have three bedrooms and two or three bathrooms depending on the apartment. They have a living room, open plan kitchen, a bathroom with a semi-circular bath and another (or third) with a shower, two large bedrooms with double beds and another bedroom with two single beds. They easily fit six people there is the possibility for another two people to sleep on the sofa in the living room. The apartments are located on levels 1 and 6.

Obviously the prices vary depending on whether you’re looking for one, two or three bedrooms.

Extra Facilities and Services

There are activities especially designed for young children. The mini club is open from 11am to 7pm more or less, depending on the number of children who are participating in the activities which they have organised or the number of children who are staying in the hotel. They combine activities both in the mini club area and outside.

The visitors tend to be Russian, French, English and German, so service in those four languages and in Spanish is guaranteed.

‘The Shop’ (mini market) is one of the fullest which we have visited in these hotels which offer the option of being able to cook in your rooms. It is small, but it has everything you need to make a fresh, healthy and natural meal. As well as having tinned items, chilled food, snacks and sweets, you will be able to find a section with fresh produce like seasonal and leafy vegetables which are fresh and varied.

Opposite there is a small hairdressers.

They tell you about all kinds of activities which you can do in the area and you can also book them.

There is a large car park within the complex at street level, with spaces specifically for disabled people. If you need a space a specific one will be allocated to you.

Final Comments from the Authors

Personally the visit pleased me in all senses, the service, the tranquillity which the hotel breathes, and above all the spectacular views of the Los Gigantes coast and the cliffs in particular … Here complete comfort and quality of service combine with proximity to many of the most interesting activities that you can try in Tenerife, such as sea kayaking, scuba diving, whale and dolphin watching, excursions on pleasure boats, etc.

Los Gigantes is also a town of coastal origin, and although bit by bit it is becoming open to tourism, it is still possible to breathe that calm air of the town it once was.
