1st January 2017 – New Year’s Day. The 1st January is a public holiday and, apart from in the tourist towns (Puerta de la Cruz, Arona and Adeje), all shops and public services are closed.

3rd December 2016 - 5th January 2017 – Nativity scene exhibition at Plaza de la Candelaria. Here, children post letters in a mailbox to the Three Wise Men. On the 5th January, and after the parade of the Three Wise Men, children head to the Gate and praise the baby Jesus.

18th December 2016 - 5th January 2017 – Christmas takes to the streets. Every town is filled with Christmas spirit, and everyone decorates the streets with festive cheer. Christmas markets are also set up. This experience and atmosphere is truly something to share with friends and family.

5th January 2017 – Parades for the Three Wise Men of the East take place all over the island. The parade in Santa Cruz de Tenerife starts at 7pm on various streets in the city centre. The importance of the Three Wise Men in the islands makes this one of best things to do in Tenerife in January 2017.

6th January 2017 – Epiphany, the day to celebrate the arrival of the Three Wise Men. This is a public holiday and, apart from in the tourist towns (Puerta de la Cruz, Arona and Adeje), all shops and public services are closed.

19th December 2016 - 8th January 2017 – Nativity scene expositions can be found in several towns. They are usually set up in squares, shops and shop windows – some people even open up their homes to the public to proudly display their own nativities. 25th November 2016 - 9th January 2017 – The 9th Nativity Scenes Route. Enjoy the festive season in a new and exciting way in La Orotava with beautiful Christmas lights, not to mention magnificent squares and streets for a bit of shopping – or perhaps a nice evening walk. You can follow the 9th version of the Nativity Scenes Route, which takes you to all the wonderful nativities throughout the town.

14th - 15th January 2017 – Celebrations in honour of San Antonio Abad. These take place all around the island, such as in Guía de Isora (14th January), Los Silos, Buenavista del Norte, Los Realejos and La Florida (La Orotava). 19th - 20th January 2017 – Festivities for San Sebastián take place in La Caleta (Adeje). He is one of the patron saints of the town, along with Mary of the Incarnation and Santa Úrsula.

19th - 22nd January 2017 – These three days mark the 40th anniversary of when La Orotava was named Conjunto Histórico (a Heritage Site). Planned lectures and tours around the town make this the ideal time for anyone and everyone to learn more about, or remember, what makes La Orotava the unique town that it is today.

9th - 23rd January 2017 – Entertainment and shows are put on in the farmers’ market in La Orotava.

 30th November 2016 - 23rd March 2017 – The Canarias Folk Fest takes place every Wednesday and Thursday at 4pm at La Plaza de Pescadora in Los Cristianos. The festival includes a variety of folk music performances, as well as an artisanal and food market.

27th December 2016 - 2nd January 2017 – Mamma Mia!, one of the best musicals in history, will be shown in the Adán Martín Auditorium. The musical, one of the best things to do in Tenerife in January 2017, has enjoyed a successful 18-year run in London, and will feature the renowned Spanish singer Nina, among other musical talents.

1st December 2016 - 4th January 2017 – You’ll be able to enjoy a mix of international and local stars at the 11th Canary Islands Gospel Festival, which will take place in La Laguna, Arona, Granadilla and Guía de Isora.

2nd - 4th January 2017 – Jóvenes cantadores celebrate the festive season with the most famous Disney songs that will thrill both young and old. Two concerts are scheduled: 8:30pm in the Leal Theatre in La Laguna on the 2nd January, and at 8pm in the Guía de Isora Auditorium on the 4th January.

3rd January 2017 – The musical "Esos Locos Fantasmas" (Those Crazy Ghosts) tells of one girl’s adventures when she enters an abandoned theatre and meets the resident ghosts. The musical will be performed at the Guimerá theatre in Santa Cruz de Tenerife at 11:30am and 5:30pm.

3rd January 2017 – Caperucita Roja (Little Red Riding Hood) is a musical version of the famous fairy tale. Performances will take place in Isla del Mar, Santa Cruz de Tenerife at 5pm and 7pm.

3rd - 4th January 2017 – Cantajuego, en busca de la Navidad (Cantajuego and the Search for Christmas). Teobaldo Power Auditorium, 5pm.

4th January 2017 – The Latonius Gospel Choir joins up with the Arona Music Band for a unique performance. Infanta Leonor Auditorium (Arona), 8:30pm.

4th January 2017 – Musical homenaje a los payasos de la tele (A Musical Homage to TV Clowns). Performances at 5pm and 7pm at the Isla del Mar Terrace, Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

4th January 2017 – El libro de la selva. El musical (The Jungle Book: The Musical), Guimerá Theatre, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Performances will start at 11:30am and 5:30pm.

7th January - 4 February - XXXII Festival de Música de Canarias in the Adán Martín Opera House, with concerts in more than 50 stages of the islands. They always start around 20:00.

13th - 31st January 2017 – Witness lyrical elegance at the La Laguna Canarias Opera House with a variety of popular and eclectic operas. Be captivated by the beauty of the music and the singers’ immense talent. Works by Mozart, Bellini and Verdi, among others, will be performed at 4pm in the Leal Theatre in La Laguna on the 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st January, and in the Juan Carlos I Auditorium in Arafo on the 13th, 20th 27th January.

13th - 14th January 2017 – Experience the art of flamenco from great performers, as well as a guest performance by renowned European jazz musician Jorge Pardo, at the 4th Romí Flamenco Festival, 8:30pm in the Teobaldo Power Auditorium, La Orotava. 2nd December 2016 - 5th January 2017 – More than one hundred artists will be displaying their work at the Art Market in the Círculo de Bellas Artes, Santa Cruz. A special exhibit dedicated to Salvador Dalí will also be shown. If you like the art, why not buy a piece or two? All works on display will be for sale, ranging from €50 to €30,000!

26th December 2016 - 5th January 2017 – Children aged 4-12 can enjoy themselves, as well as learn something new, at Christmas workshops held at a number of museums on the island. Whether it be science, history or art, all activities are environmentally friendly and guaranteed to bring a smile to your children’s faces. Workshops will take place at the Tenerife History and Anthropology Museum in La Laguna, the Nature and Man Museum in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and the Space and Science Museum in La Laguna.

29th December 2016 - 5th January 2017 – The NativityArt exhibition contains a variety of alternative nativity scenes made out of different materials. The inspiration for these scenes brings Christmas tradition and different cultures together. The exhibition, in our list of things to do in Tenerife in January 2017, will be held at La Recova Art Centre.

7th - 8th January 2017 – The Santa Bubble Show tells the story of how Santa Claus lost his memory, and must fill his workshop with bubbles so that his true personality is restored, and he remembers that he has to deliver presents in time for Christmas. The show will be performed on the 7th January at 5pm in the Teobaldo Power Auditorium, La Orotava, and on the 8th January at 5pm in Paraninfo ULL, La Laguna.

23rd November 2016 - 8th January 2017 – Young and emerging artists show off their works at the 11th “Art Supermarket”, Merkarte. The market is held in Lercaro House at the Tenerife History and Anthropology Museum, La Laguna, and is open 9am-8pm from Tuesday to Saturday, and 10am-5pm on Sundays, Mondays and public holidays.

7th, 14th, 21st and 28th January 2017 – Follow the story of a person’s journey through life and the inward search for five secrets of the values and principles that are fundamental to life in the Bollywood-esque spectacle, Secrets of India. The show, one of the top things to do in Tenerife in January 2017,  will take place at 5pm each day in Círculo de Bellas Artes, Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

7th, 14th, 21st and 28th January 2017 – Bewilderment and laughs are guaranteed with Sacrilegio (Sacrilege), a theatrical comedy that tells the story of a convent that neighbours a football training ground. The show will take place at 8:30pm each day in Círculo de Bellas Artes, Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

7th, 14th, 21st and 28th January 2017 – Sexo Sentido (The Sex Feeling) is a musical where the taboos of sex are explored in discussion. The show will take place at 10:30pm in Círculo de Bellas Artes, Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th January 2017 – Uno más y la cuenta (One More and the Bill) delights and amuses its audiences, and the characters’ experiences deliver the message that everyone wants to search for their own happiness. This funny show, one of the best things to do in Tenerife in January 2017,  will take place at 6:30pm in Círculo de Bellas Artes, Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th January 2017 – The world of magic is right before your eyes with Oz, mundo mágico (The Magical World of Oz). The show will take place at 12pm in Círculo de Bellas Artes, Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

13th, 20th and 27th January 2017 – Sandro Nerilli brings a new spectacle packed with magic and humour for your enjoyment. The show will take place at 8:30pm in Círculo de Bellas Artes, Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

23rd November 2016 - 27th January 2017 – Stop by the CajaCanarias Cultural Space, La Laguna, for local artist Rafael Monagas’ exhibition: Cueva del sol (Sun Cave).

29th November 2016 - 11th February 2017 – Stop by local artist Pedro González’s El espacio y el hombre (Space and Man) exhibition at the CajaCanarias Cultural Space, Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

9th November 2016 - 19th March 2017 – The TEA in Santa Cruz hosts Amparo Sard’s exhibition, Luz. La sombra del tiempo (Light. The Shadow of Time). Come and see the sinister and scary and its transformation into something beautiful!

30th November 2016 - 29th January 2017 – Ilusionismo. ¿Magia o ciencia? (Illusionism. A Magic or a Science?) explores how our brains work through lectures, workshops and other activities (including a chill-out zone!). Stop by the marquee on Avenida Francisco La Roche for an interesting and educational day out!

2nd December 2016 - 2nd January 2017 – Ankor Ramos’ Un paseo por India (A journey through India) takes you on a journey with a collection of 30 distinct and magnificent photographs of the country. The exhibition will be held in García Sanabria Park’s Art Room.

18th December 2016 - 4th January 2017 – The Rink, a 5-star ice skating rink, one of the best things to do in Tenerife in January 2017, is open to the public every day (as well as Friday and Saturday evenings). Stop by Magma Arte & Congresos in Costa Adeje for some winter fun on the 720m2 frozen wonderland!

22nd December 2016 - 8th January 2017 – El PIT 2016 (Tenerife’s Children’s park), located in Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s fairground, is the ideal place for your children to let loose during their Christmas holidays. One of the best things to do in Tenerife in January 2017 with kids.

3rd December 2016 - 5th March 2017 – Don Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, embajador de España (Don Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, Ambassador to Spain) is an homage to the great Cervantes in the old San Francisco Convent in Icod de los Vinos.

9th December 2016 - 12th March 2017 – Crisis? What Crisis? is an exhibition of various artists’ views, expressed in art form, on the events of the last decade. The exhibition will take place at TEA (Tenerife’s Arts Space), Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Sports and other activities

8th January 2017 – Take on the 3rd Chanajiga Trail in the municipality of Los Realejos. Two routes are available to participants: the 12km route (15 per person) and the 22km route (18 per person).

14th January 2017 – A fan of twilight views? Then don’t hesitate to tackle the 3rd Tegueste Night Trail (15.3km). Price per person: 22.

14th January 2017 - “Discovering Fasnia” races are held in order to raise money to help those most in need around the region. Three races will be held on Saturday 14th January, the first being at 9:30am for children aged 5-13. The next race is slated to be for those with special needs/who are differently abled, and the final race for adults will begin at 10:30am. The starting point for all races will be at the main square in Fasnia.

21st January 2017 – The 5th Historic Santiago del Teide Night Race gives you the opportunity to both compete and have fun, as well as give in a meaningful way to those in need by donating 5kg of non-perishable foods to the municipal food bank. Entry is permitted to all over the age of 15.

28th January 2017 – The La Caleta de Adeje Night Race (9km) begins at 8pm.
